Gandino Knows – L.A. Edition (Venice Beach)

As announced in my last L.A. post, I take you to a tour through the Venice Beach Freakshow. But to be straight: the pictures won’t tell the whole story here. You have to experience it!!

There is so much stuff going on on this Ocean Front Walk, I was wondering why they had this special location, because ALL OF IT is a freakshow! There is everything going on, that you could imagine, PLUS everything that you would have never imagined.

Overall, this area seems to attract also talented and gifted people that pursue their art. No offense, but many of them seem to be also somewhat crazy or I don’t know. There was this one guy, who had the appearance of a homeless, sitting at his bummed up and damaged piano on the Ocean Front Walk. He played really well, but maybe he is one of the people that failed in their quest of making it to Hollywood???

Also on our first night there, when we went to SUBWAY to get something to eat really quick, there was a guy in there, that was working on his art, that was spread out over two tables!!! But that just seemed to be normal there as nobody else did even care.

One day, a guy was discussing Nate Dogg‘s death really loud! He had the opinion, that he died, because he had too much money to spend on unhealthy food.

A few minutes later a homeless man needed my help: “Do you guys have any change, so that I can get my wife drunk, so I can get laid tonight?” I was glad to help him out!!!

But maybe you’ll also come accross the stars of tomorrow…

There were also many murals around.

I very much liked this one.

Horny streetart.

If I would have a Mexican wrestler nickname alreadyyy, I would’ve also brought homw a mask. Maybe next time! Nickname suggestions welcome :)

Obviously you are not allowed to be dope on 7th Av in Venice. Must suck for the residents over there! ;-)

What I didn’t mention before… We even had ocean view from our room in the hostel.

Also while I unfortunately don’t have any other pics of Venice Beach Hostel, I can only recommend staying there. It is right by the ocean and Ocean Front Walk, right by Abbot Kinney Blvd (bars & nightlife) and also has a cool & friendly staff, clean rooms and even supplies some food in the morning and evening.

I especially like Charlotte‘s blog (@charlottecramer), because her posts are a nice collection of thought-provoking things!

Finally some stickers around Venice Beach.

Nope! It wasn’t sunny all the time…

We also came across many homeless people in this area, but you didn’t feel unsafe, they were rather friendly. When we left, there was this one guy saying “good bye” from the other side of the street. One also asked Charlotte to add him on Facebook.

So, our time in Venice was everything else but boring!

Oh, and notice this Tokyo-like crossing on this intersection right in front of our hostel along with the VENICE sign.

THANK Y’ALL…

… for a great year 2011…! I wanted to do a full year review with video and so on, but at the end of the day I hadn’t had the time (sorry), but anywayz… we wanna thank everyone who supported us throughout the year and will hopefully continue to do so in the future, so THANK YOU – and yeah, that’s exctly you, if you are a Facebook member ;-)

To finish off the year I’m gonna run some of the recent pics that were sent to us of people rocking the RUN FFM shirt…!

Ladies first! This is the beautiful mrswood of mrandmrswood rocking our shirt. And yeah, she really likes construction sites and road works. ;-)

This was a krayzie honour as DJ Neil Armstrong was doing his thing while wearing our shirt, when he been to Frankfurt recently.

That’s such a dope pic!!! It’s Joe from Frankfurt/Rhein-Main based Sorrow Crew.

Our shirt is also perfect for the 5pm tea time as shown be my (now unfortunately) ex-teammate Andi (We’ll miss ya… Pause…)…

…. as well as for the consumption of other beverages as Micha demonstrates in this pic.

If you are a @chrishimself84 YouTube channel subscriber, I’m sure Gauweed‘s face looks familiar to you. :)

This is Josua & Leon (we used to play ball for the same club as I did a few years ago – good to see you in our shirt! :D) in front of a very dope wall, don’t you think??

And last but not least the Witters, who I also know from when we were kids, after they run this year’s Frankfurt marathon. Congrats.

Going for a walk.

Today, I was going for a walk to help me get over my cold and I went all the way at the riverside of the Main in Höchst (like I alreadyyy did here) just to discover these great pieces of art. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any tag or something, but still R.E.S.P.E.C.T. to the artist.

[UPDATE 19/10/2010: Thanks to StadtkindFFM, who posted a comment under this post after he got a comment posted on his flickr pic, we now know, who the artists are: It's Herakut (formed by Hera & Akut out of Frankfurt), who did this and lots of other cool paintings, always with their unique style. Thx, Stadtkind...!]

By the way, by staying home I get to do some important stuff, but I really miss ballin’ with my new teammates. Can’t have everything, I know.

RUNFFM looks good on your chest

This post is dedicated to some of our strongest supporters out there, everyone who bought one of our RUNFFM T-Shirts and those who actually send us a picture of them wearing it.
All of them are extremely awesome, look at what Rodney did who was here on vacation just a few weeks back.

Are you a Yankees fan? =) I guess RUNFFM.COM is cool with the Yankees now huh? haha

There are some more cool pictures at Rodneys flickr page and make sure to check out his newest online venture called JuntosWorldWide.com , its a travelsite/blog hybrid where people can share photos and videos about their recent travels around the globe. It’s a little different than the usual travel websites since you get the information right from the person travelling in a kind of refreshing and personal style, kinda like our blog where you find random information on our daily “adventures” in our local midst or on tour =).

He is also into vlogging and produces little videoclips like the one right here where he interviewed yours truly.

But Rodney is not the only one I really like this shot of Philipp too.

Photowalk 06.08.2010 Streetwear edition

We really had to have another meeting in the city today for several reasons, we sold out almost all of our T-Shirts and need to restock asap. and we are already making plans for upcoming events and were talking about some details for our new “products”. Also Andi (@theballatician) finished his semester finals so he finally had the time to meet up .. he had a rough night partying though ;) but “you cant knock the hustle” hahaha.

Met Mike too today was cool hanging out with him again after a long while, I’m already looking forward to go party with him at tomorrows Flutschfinger event, if you are interested make sure to scroll down and check out the details its organized by Market41 a pop-up store in Frankfurt that is plain awesome but I will get to that later in that post.

So since I have never seen the Market41 store in person I had to drag the guys to it to check it out. Its aaaaall the way in the back of this little area on “Große Bockenheimer/Fressgasse” near “Alte Oper”
if you have no idea where it is and you are in Frankfurt and want to check it out then click here for google maps lol.

Lea, who is the owner of Market41, offered us to put some of our RUNFFM shirts on display for the next two months. The whole concept of a pop-up shop is that it only opens for a short
period of time and basically offers some brands or products that are normally not widely availible, basically for you to get a little taste of whats out there.

Here comes our little dilemma that we solved with the power of coffee.

Soon-Ho dropped by, how dope, I havent seen this guy in a long while he had finals too and is now preparing for his diploma thesis but I am already looking forward to go out and hit some parties with him before he is “gone” again to work on his diploma.

Also I noticed that my camera was still on some weird setting that I tried out few days ago so I had to fix some pictures in post at least a little bit, däng.

Soon-Ho talking over some double-shot espresso, word!.

Well we were able to get at least a little “sample run” of a few sizes to show at tomorrows Market41 event to solve our little dilemma, also Mike was very helpful ironing the T-Shirts LOL!.

I really love this picture down here, Mike is ironing and Claudia is chilling eating a sandwich hahahhaha great moment! What an awesome couple! =D

Soon-Ho digged into the chorizo!

Okay so all in all this was a pretty productive day we managed to talk to our screenprinter to order a reprint and were able to put out some T-Shirts on display.

Day In Day Out

We went out for a RUNFFM meeting and to get some Burgers today since yesterday was the so called “Hamburger Day”, not so sure about how that came to be, but I am always good for a Burger.

The place where we got the Hamburgers is called “Die Kuh die lacht” (http://www.diekuhdielacht.com) and I can recommend the place for “Der Chef” Burger, it’s tasty! Located at Schillerstraße 28 in Frankfurt am Main close to the station exit “Hauptwache-Passage”.

Afterwards only a few meters from the Burger place we checked out a shop called “Julies Barbershop” (http://www.juliesbarbershop.com/), it is a mix of a Barbershop and a Fashion Boutique.

Ohayo Japan! Pt.2

Time for a new blogpost from Japan this time I thought I would show you some of the areas around the hostel first.

Heres the mainstreet towards the hostel.

Heres another shot of the river thats going through the neighborhood, I think its the Kanda River but I’m not 100% sure.

Well next it was off to Shibuya.

One is a little different, a little cooler, then the other.

Sega is still alive and kickin in Tokyo though I heard alot of Sega Arcades closed down.

Well I’ll be keeping it “stabil” in Tokyo like this guy, peace out gotta go to sleep now.

Cheers from London, Part 3.

So today was the day after the race and I’ll get to that in the video. Just this right now: It was an amazing experience and even though Oxford lost, you can only be proud of the guys!!!

I wanted to do only three things today, but I was running around the city for 10 hours to do so. That’s just how big London is. Today’s post is also an iPhone edition, because I couldn’t take my regular cam to the Fulham game.

My first stop was the Sunday Up Market near Brick Lane. Small booths offered fashion items like shirts, hats, glasses and also art and bootleged music (Or is there maybe any other word for CDs that are recorded from vinyl??).

Dan Hillier has also a booth on this market and I went to check it out and have a brief conversation with him, because he has a design in the ‘Sag es mit einem Design’ contest from Freiraum and in my opinion he does some extraordinary work, that I haven’t seen from anybody else.

On this market I found a booth with lots of these blocks. I just had to get me some.

Outside on Brick Lane, there was also lot of stuff going on like it apparently does on every Sunday.

I also noticed an incredible amount of vintage shops everywhere I went here in London.

Some American Apparel Sale was going down, too.

Around this area I found lots of streetart, cool designs and again some stickers. :)

After I only could spent about an hour there, I had to rush to Putney again to catch the Premier League game between Fulham FC and Wigan Athletic. I had to go to one of those, while I’m here.

What I really like was that this an old stadium and not a new football palace. In the picture above you can see, that from the street, it looks like an old fabric or something.

He has to be to them what MJ was to the Bulls.

And finally, this was the view from my seat. It was tough to decide, whether to follow the game or observe this poor guy in the orange jacket, because his tough battle against not falling asleep was much more entertaining. But the second half offered a much better effort, so there was no question anymore. And I’m glad about it, because otherwise I don’t know, if I would’ve seen the ball coming directly into my direction at one point. Unfortunately, I had to throw it back. Would have been a nice souvenir. Oh, and Fulham also scored two goals in the second half to their 2-1 victory.

The weather was really great today, so I could enjoy my walk along the Thames back to the Underground station. And yes, you can call me a Fulham fan from now on! Hehehe…

My final task for the day was to spoil my stomach even more with the best pizza in town. And man, is this a pizza or what?? You don’t even see the plate anymore. Also tasted amazingly.

I’ll be leaving for Oxford tomorrow to chill with Simon, so don’t expect me to post from there. See you, when I’m back in Frankfurt.

Streetart in the Philippines

When I was in the Philippines for about a year I didnt really notice that there was any local hip hop scene at all but there is one.

Check out this little documentary about the local street artists, unfortunately without subtitles so in order to understand something you have to speak tagalog but still quite watchable.

Stickers and Streetart around Tokyo

While shooting some footage around the Tokyo streets last August I kept recognizing these “sumo face” decals almost everywhere around Tokyo, alot of them in Harajuku and Asakusa somehow, streetart still seems to be big in Tokyo. I even saw a little documentary about these “sumo faces” if I can find it again I will post the youtube link below aswell.
